Lemonade's journey began over a millennium ago in 10th-century Egypt with kashkab, a drink made from fermented barley, mint, rue, black pepper, and citron leaf. As lemons arrived in North Africa in the 12th centry, they transformed this concoction into qatarmizat, a blend of lemon juice, water, and sugar—the earliest form of lemonade.

Fast forward to the 19th century, and lemonade had become a popular refreshment in America. By 1879, the first known mention of pink lemonade appeared in an article from West Virginia’s Wheeling Register, linking the drink to traveling circuses, and by 1892, pink lemonade recipes began appearing in cookbooks, such as E.E. Kellogg's Science in the Kitchen, which featured a version made with raspberry, strawberry, currant, or cranberry juice. As the story goes, Palmer casually ordered his favorite mix in Palm Springs, and a nearby guest said, “I want what he’s having.” Boom: a drink icon was born.
