What is CBD?
CBD is one of many cannabinoids found in the hemp plant that offers beneficial properties to many suffering from a myriad of issues & ailments. People are most drawn to the fact that there's very little side effects from using a supplement like CBD.
In the marijuana plant there's very low concentrations of CBD but high THC. Hemp is the opposite with High CBD and trace amounts of THC. In a full spectrum extract you will find a full array of cannabinoids plus small amounts of THCa, THC & THCv.
CBD can also be isolated from the hemp plant so it can be used with capsules, oils & edibles without any THC. While whole plant has terpenes and a full spectrum of benefits some people are fine with an isolate.
CBD extracts can come in many different forms but the most common is a CBD oil or gummy. You can also smoke the hemp flower for a nice relaxing effect without psychoactive effects.
CBD and Me
Let's face it - it doesn't work if you don't actually take it. CBD certainly won't help if you don't give your body a fighting chance to find the benefits of the oil. Once you find your routine to taking it by keeping at your bedside or next to your computer in your office.
Be patient and stay on it. Anywhere that you feel it's convenient when you need it and will help keep you on a routine. I'm a classic case of someone who has a massive vitamin cabinet where supplements that didn't "wow" me after a while went to get left behind.
I will say this I'm now coming up to my 9 month anniversary of taking cbd oil and here's the list of issues that are a thing of the past for me, personally.
- Hormonal Depression & Anxiety
- Rarely any cold and sickness this winter
- Crippling cramps
- The speed of which I heal now from cuts/bruises is probably the most random and not intended effect
- Less recovery time from workouts
- More focus when working on projects and other daily work duties
- Massive reduction in STRESS ( I can't push this one out there enough) Stress is so debilitating and makes your immune system drop a notch.
We like to joke about how I could not have done a double move & started this business without CBD but it's a fact. Not being stressed is almost like being on cloud 9 and nothing can touch you. No negativity just coping and working through issues without the increased heart rate. The problems didn't go away just how you deal with them changes and so does your overall health.
Now, I only started taking the oil for cramps and everything else was just a bonus. I had no clue how it would affect me or if it would end us in the supplement graveyard in the back of my pantry. It's now in my nightstand, purse and car.
Whenever I feel I may need a little extra help in my day. I think it may be my only supplement that I run out of and have to replace vs it expiring first.
Cannabis was no stranger in the ancient times as mentioned throughout history for centuries and has been traced back to as far as 8000BC in the region now called China & Taiwan.
In 6000BC hemp seed oil was used in the diets of the Asian regions and in 4000BC the fiber was used in ropes for pottery. Periodically, different artifacts are found mummified with ancient Persian cultures & tribes. They mention "bhang" another word for cannabis in their text as their "narcotic". Urns of seeds have been found stored and dated as cannabis spread through Europe.
Interestingly enough, in 200AD the First Pharmacopoeia lists medical marijuana. It was used in Greece as a anesthetic by surgeons and a young woman was documented using cannabis during childbirth in 300AD. Cannabis was used for centuries all over the world as a typical medicine for over 300 issues and ailments. Food, fiber & part of the early development of America, hemp was a major player in history.
It's hard to believe it was banned in September 1937 due to being such massive threat to the textile industries. The lobbying worked and it was successfully demoted from being a "billion dollar crop" to wiped off the history books for another 77 years.
Flash forward to modern day & you can find CBD & hemp products on every corner in just about every store. So why is that? What made this simple cannabis plant go from making paper, rope & food to now being one of the most popular supplements we've seen in decades? The CBD business alone is projected to grow by 20% every year and continuing to ramp up for years to come.
You can't deny CBD being mainstream at this point and we've even seen it used as a substitute for alcohol throughout the COVID-pandemic. With millions of Americans spending more time at home than ever CBD has made its way into homes of about 1 in 7 Americans.
From CBD infused honey dust in their coffee, a cbd chocolate midday or just taking a dose of full spectrum cbd oil. Then as the day winds down our customers are turning to a CBD hemp flower pre-roll, a few puffs from a vape or a tall cold glass of Ablis CBD.
As a retailer we see the satisfaction from our customers when they try CBD. First timers & established users alike, once you find "your brand" & your proper dose it's an everyday staple. Americans are taking variety of CBD oils due to bountiful cannabinoids that respond well with the body, and its natural endocannabinoid system.
There are over 400 chemical entities found in cannabis and hemp with 60 of them are cannabinoid compounds. While we don't know why CBD helps some & not others we do know it's worth it to give it a try.
You may notice it's for you fairly quickly or it may take a couple weeks. While CBD is the most popular, there are other shining stars like Cannabichromene & Cannabigerol which we have in our latest high potency tinctures in our store and website.
An endocannabinoid system is a mapping of intricate receptors found in your brain and nervous system. The EC regulates your most vital life functions in a mammal’s body like mood, pain sensations, sleep patterns, appetite, memory and your immune system.
One of the first sources of cannabinoids that humans receive is when they're born since breast milk is laden with cannabinoids. Your body naturally produces cannabinoids but supplements like CBD interact with the EC system in your body. The EC system also controls the numerous glands in your body like the thyroid, adrenal and pituitary glands.
Even though there’s still so much we don’t know about this system as it was discovered in the early 90's there’s too many success stories that you can’t ignore the positive impacts. It’s not the holy grail for everyone but even those that aren’t suffering greatly from chronic disease describe feeling less stressed, sleeping better and just overall homeostasis.
One topic that I find myself discussing with many customers is that they have tried all of the medications available and are still not feeling well. This leads me to the topic of an endocannabinoid deficiency which is one of the recent conversations I see floating around explaining why so many are finding peace with such a simple supplement like CBD. Now this is just a theory but it outlines what some researchers have been led to believe when the body isn’t functioning properly.
Everything is out of whack and all you want to do it start over with a clean slate. That seems almost impossible once you start navigating the dizzying pathways of the medical system and prescription drugs. This might explain though why many of these conditions like migraines, fibromyalgia & irritable bowel syndrome develop due to a deficiency of something our body craves. That's just the tip of the iceberg too. :)
The ECS & Fertility
While we don't know a lot about CBD and Fertility here's what we do know....
Once you start taking a CBD supplement you begin to gently activate your endocannabinoid system. In turn this system regulates the physiological processes like fertility & pregnancy. Additionally a 2012 study also linked the endocannabinoid system with increased female sexual arousal.
There are cannabinoid detectors in sperm like the GPR18 which was discovered to activate sperm cells & improve their chances of fertilizing an egg. Not to mention their is receptors in the female reproductive tract which has been shown to cater to the ovarian system while regulating the follicle maturation. All of these processes tie directly into fertility in men & women.
There's also discussion on how the ECS & female reproductive system can effect PCOS. Sadly there's still not published research but if you're trying to get pregnant you need all the help you can get.
Another thought is how a deficiency in the endocannabinoid system can cause low levels of anandamide which can interfere with ovulation or the ability to get pregnant. CBD can boost those levels through inhibiting the breakdown of the enzyme FAAH.
Stress can also effect men and women enough to inhibit the fertility process. CBD activates the serotonin receptors as well and boost the mood of either parties.
We always encourage you to do your own research but it was interesting to see the ties between each system in your body.
